Homeowner’s Insurance Discounts

in Know Your System

As an alarm system owner, there are a number of great benefits that you are entitled to.  Peace of mind is the major one, and in the coming future greater control and automation over your home.  What about financial discounts?  I suppose that it is probably too far to say that you are entitled to a discount, but most insurance companies will give you a discount on your homeowner’s insurance policy if you have an alarm system.  The discounts that insurance companies  give will vary,  typical discounts range anywhere from 5-20% depending on the type of policy you have, and the insurance company itself.

But hey, as long as you have a system you might as well get a discount! Or, if you’re thinking about purchasing a system, ask your insurance agent what types of discounts they give.  Your system may end up being much cheaper than you think.

1. Talk to your agent

If you don’t know who your agent is, then just call your insurance company. The nice customer service person can probably answer your questions too.  Find out what types of discounts are available.  Be aware that most insurance companies will give one discount for burglary protection, and another discount for fire protection.  Depending on the type of equipment you purchased at the time of installation, you may want to add (for instance) a smoke alarm so that you are eligible for both discounts.

This NOT the sort of Fire Alarm you'll want to add.

2. Call APX Alarm Customer Support

(1-800-216-5232) Tell them that you are working with your insurance agent for a discount.  One of the Customer Support agents will be able to get a certificate of installation, certifying that you do have a monitored alarm system, out to you and/or your insurance company.

3. Profit

Once your insurance company gets the certificate you will just need to work with them (perhaps fill out some paperwork or answer some questions), and WHAM-O!  Your insurance premium costs less than it used to.
